It was terribly sad! Them going to the water together almost broke me, and I hadn't been feeling at all sentimental about those two during the movie, not like I was about our old, married space-jedi-monks.
And yes! the lady pilots were very welcome!
Oh, and one more thing, since I think you also read Claudia Gray's Bloodline--I thought the Mon Mothma in this movie, with how she was working the Alliance, not exactly manipulating everyone, but more than willing to play things at cross-purposes when she could (she wouldn't go against the vote of the council but she surely had to know (or at least hope) that someone would be willing to support the Rogue team, etc) fit well with the characterization the book had of her and how everything sort of fell apart when she died.
I went to a panel of SW writers at DragonCon and unfortunately CG wasn't one of them, but the 2 women on the panel were both huge fans of her books and there were a few moments of geeky XX bonding with the fans in the crowd during the panel. It was pretty awesome. :D
