2016 fic writing summary

Once again, I'm only now just getting to this, but at this point it's basically a tradition...

Previous years: 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004

backwards forwards square and round === Hawkeye, Clint/Kate (1000 words)

in deep with you darling === The Avengers, Thor, CA: TWS, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Clint/Darcy, background Jane/Thor (~24,000 words posted in 2016)

Operation: Normal Life Is So F*cked === Captain America: Civil War / MCU, Clint/Darcy(~2300 words)

take the world together === Avengers: Age of Ultron / MCU, Clint/Laura (~4800 words)

loving you whether whether === CA: TWS / MCU, Sam/Darcy (~2200 words written in 2016)

starlit wave === Star Trek AOS, Kirk/Pike (~8400 words)

not entirely accurate === Leverage, Parker/Hardison/Eliot (~1200 words)

practically perfect === Hawkeye, Clint/Kate (~10K words)

So, that's, hmm, ~56K words, which is not all that much, but there are also about another 50K of unfinished stuff still waiting for my brain to work out the issues and find the ending. Also, I'm not turning down any of the words I did manage to write.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you never would've guessed? Nothing really surprising this year, though I do have half a Kirk/Bones fic that got resurrected again.

What's your own favorite story of the year? practically perfect, because my brain was all about taking extra-canon ideas and making them work with actual canon and that line that Clint used to introduce Kate in the Fraction/Aja run launched a whole long train of thought for me.

Did you take any writing risks this year? Not that have made it out of the drafting stage

My best story of this year: in deep with you darling ended up working well (I thought) around all the MCU canon except for the farm. But since I was 30K into the story before the farm appeared, I'm not holding that against it. :D

My most popular story of this year: in deep with you darling and its quick, one-off post-Civil War sequel Operation: Normal Life Is So F*cked by a long, long way. Darcyland continues to be amazing and supportive.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: practically perfect -- Kate/Clint is definitely a small fandom, and I usually am fine with that, but I loved this one and I want *everyone* to see it.

Most fun story to write: not entirely accurate because what's not fun about Eliot/Parker/Hardison and Area 51?

Story with the single sexiest moment: This was definitely the year of fade-to-black (or, really, scene vs summary) so I think the only real sex I wrote/posted was Kirk/Pike in starlit wave, but that was pretty decent so there's that. In unposted work, there's a sequel to in deep with you darling that's mostly a PWP and includes sex in a club, orgasm denial, and then forced orgasm(s); a sequel to The Physicist and the Assassin that's all about fisting; a Laura/Clint PWP with some lightly kinky pregnant sex; and a stand-alone Clint/Darcy that has some angry, rough sex.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Nothing much this year, at least that got finished and posted. The aforementioned Clint/Darcy with angry sex also includes Hanukkah and latkes, and the juxtaposition is a little jarring at the moment.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: in deep with you darling made me think hard-hard-hard about the characters as shown in the MCU and how I could spin off of those characterizations to fit them together.

Hardest story to write: in deep with you darling, again, because it took me *forever* to get to the happy ending.

Biggest Disappointment: That list of unfinished things makes me crazy.

Biggest Surprise: Walking out of Star Trek Beyond, laughing that they really had just ignored ITD, and then realizing that oh, yeah, so could I!

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: Operation: Normal Life Is So F*cked -- Darcy was a lot angrier with post-Civil War Tony than I was, but wow, was that cathartic to write. This could also be a tie with starlit wave, because, hah, I do not CARE if you kill off my favorite, I will write the goddamned happy ending sequel regardless.

Fic-writing goals for 2016: Last year I wrote:

Finish in deep with you darling, OMG. Write some Finn/Poe and wallow in the Gay Space Pilots for a while. Finish the Darcy/Sam b/c Sam Wilson needs some love and Darcy could use somebody with his head screwed on straight. Try not to be afraid of the WiP folder!

So, uh, yay for getting done with idwyd? I think for 2017, I would really like to finish a few more things.

That's still a good number of words! Finishing things is always a great goal, but a hard one, I find.

I hear you on Kate/Clint (or even Kate & Clint) being a small fandom. I did one in that fandom I am quite fond of (Diamonds and Rust), but only a handful of people read it so I just have to keep my fondness to myself. The one that is mostly about them but tagged Clint/Natasha did much better (although that, too, seems to be increasingly niche). Oh well.

But congrats on a prolific year! I think I read everything except Leverage (of which I know nothing) and the Star Trek one. Must have a look at the latter!

Thank you! My brain was all over the place this past year, so I'm happy to have gotten as much done as I did. I'm glad I gave in and wrote a few of the quick ideas (the Trek one falls into that category, as I really did come out of the theater thinking that if they could pretend ITD never happened, so could I, which is key when the protagonist of your sole Trek storyline died in the first 10 minutes of ITD. ;) )

You might like Leverage -- the show, not necessarily this story of mine. It's clever and nicely written/acted, and for a show that's essentially about one heist after another, it has lovely character development and some serious found-family feels.
