topaz119: (life)
So, I was supposed to be clearing out my closet this weekend (the shelf/hanging rod pulled out of the wall a few weeks ago, so I am taking the opportunity to Kondo it), but, yeah, I really wasn't in the mood. (Am I ever in the mood for cleaning tasks?)

Instead: pr0n. ::curtsies::

Part 2 of spinning on that dizzy edge, Clint/Darcy, MCU, Explicit, ~11,600 words (total), mostly just a PWP.

Title: Shift Colors
Fandom: Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
Rating: PG-13 (language only)
Length: ~5000 words
Pairing: William Brandt/Ethan Hunt
Notes: There was a new movie and my brain decided to see if we could work that canon into Mission Anomalies (but then it took a long time, surprise.) Also, this turned into fluff when I was expecting not much but a PWP, \o?.

Summary: Because nothing in their life ever plays out the simple or easy way, even after the team delivers Lane to the joint MI6-CIA task force, Will barely has time to check Ethan for obvious injuries before they’re each pulled in opposite directions.

Title: spinning on that dizzy edge
Fandom: Thor, Avengers, MCU
Rating: Explicit
Length: ~3900 words
Pairing: Clint Barton/Darcy Lewis
Notes: So, I was stuck in the house, and unable to pull myself away from the horror of my twitter feed over the weekend. The best I could do was to switch over the g-docs and write another few sentences of pr0n before I went back under with the next nightmare scenario. Sorry?

Summary: It tends to get a little crazy between them when Clint’s been out with the Avengers before he comes to see her: he’s happy to be alive, he guesses; Darcy's wound up at being too far away to do anything but watch shit fall apart on the news; and they take it out on each other. Usually, they’re back to what passes for normal by the next day, but today, watching her writhe and whimper under his hands, Clint faces the fact that it doesn’t look like that crazy streak is quite done with them yet.

Title: practically perfect
Fandom: Hawkeye (Marvel 616)
Rating: Mature
Length: ~10,000 words
Pairing: Clint Barton/Kate Bishop
Notes: Written for the 2016 Hawkeye Squared Xmas Exchange.

Summary: It’d started out to be just a normal day-after-assembly day, one of the ones where Kate had been too tired to make it to her place and they’d ended up crashed out on the couch with the TV flickering through the night, but now Clint’s staring at her like she just slapped him, which okay, maybe isn’t all that much of a stretch, and Kate’s hands are shaking hard enough that she has to put her coffee down before it sloshes over the side of the chipped mug and burns her.

(It’s bad, Kate thinks. She's putting her coffee down, that's how bad it is.)

I read this quote from Cory Booker somewhere in the gazillion blogs I follow: Never let your inability to do everything undermine your determination to do something.

It is sticking with me, so I thought I'd share.

(There's also this quote from Terry Pratchett: Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.

That's sticking with me, too.)

(Not a quote, but something I've been thinking: What would Princess Leia do? New ink isn't in the budget, but it's on my mind.)

In random news, my mother-in-law handed me $50 (for my birthday) when they were up to see BabyBoy's play this weekend, and I am tempted to just drop it in an envelope and forward it directly to the ACLU. Somewhat relatedly, I have been sitting with the word ‘elitest' this past week, as it gets thrown (or mumbled) at me a lot during discussions of the type we're going to have to have going forward. On one level, I get it—not only do I have multiple university degrees, but they come from schools smack in the middle of that description. On another level, I most certainly did not come from that kind of a background and I worked my fucking ass off to get there and not wash out, which people who actually know me should also know. So I tend to react defensively to that word and I'm trying to work past that so I can talk to people more effectively. I'm not exactly sure how all that's going, but I guess we'll see how quickly I get a migraine at Thanksgiving and take it from there.

On a happier note, BabyBoy's play was amazing. *He* was amazing. (Well, so was the whole cast, but omg, that was my baby up there on stage for almost the entire play.) I went on Wednesday to see their dress rehearsal and it actually managed to distract me from the horror show of real life. I am incredibly proud of him for getting up there and committing to it 100% and just being so good at it. We had guests all weekend, as people came and went to see the various performances, so that was also distracting in a real enough way and kept me running around enough that I slept almost as soon as I fell into bed. The tricky part is going to be keeping that going, because nothing is going to get done without good sleep.

Also on the distraction level, I asked for prompts for my birthday, and I got the first one finished over the weekend. It took a little longer than usual, but it also went on a little longer than your usual comment fic, so I went ahead and posted it to AO3 last night:

not entirely accurate, Leverage, gen-ish Parker/Hardison/Eliot, for [personal profile] schneefink's prompt: Leverage and spaceship(s) or aliens?

Title: Starlit Wave
Fandom: Star Trek Beyond / AOS
Rating: Explicit
Length: ~8400 words
Pairing: Christopher Pike/Jim Kirk
Notes: Since it was pretty obvious that Star Trek Beyond was pretending that Into Darkness didn't actually exist, I decided I could do the same, too. So, yeah, that stuff with Pike in the beginning of the second movie? Nope. Never happened.

Summary: So far as Chris could tell, with the warp capabilities of this particular ship, it was going to take a week and a half to get out to Yorktown, and probably the better part of the remaining half-week to finalize the approach and docking.

That gave him two weeks to figure out what the hell he was doing.

let's see...

1. I'm on the Imzy train--no idea what I'm doing there yet, but I'm topaz119 there, too, and I have a zillion invites if anyone would like one.

2. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time on the phone with Disney World tech support this past week -- as a software development professional, I am qualified to say that they got their Happy Path right (which is what 99.9% of you all will be doing should you ever decide to go & stay there for a while and it's really very nice) but more than half the time we do a trip, we are not on said path and it always takes a call (or 3) to sort things out. At this point, I am officially OVER the Food & Wine trip wrangling and will have Oldest use BabyBoy's Magic Band and FP+ schedule as it looks like BB will not be going and (of course) all of his stuff went through on the first try while Oldest somehow got dropped from the room reservation (which means I can't do his FP reservations for another month.)

(Please don't take this as an indication of oh-this-is-too-hard, because, really, I'm trying to coordinate 16 people across 3 different Disney master accounts with a DVC reservation + a resort package w/the Dining Plan and a mad combination of 1-Day tix, APs & the package tix. Kudos to the people on the phone with me trying to sort it all out.)

I can't wait to do this for NYE. /sarcasm

3. DragonCon is less than a week away! Preliminary schedule planning is in progress and I am on a quest for the spare cell phone batteries. I know I have 4 or 5 of them but they are totally not where I think they should be.

4. We have reached the conclusion that it is time to add a new furkid to our household and have been visiting with local rescue organizations and reviewing websites daily. BB wants a pug, my good-old-boy husband needs him something not-small and yappy, and I, of course, have fallen in love with a Shi-Tzu mix. Please stay tuned for further developments.

5. I wrote something! (points to icon) Well, I'm almost always writing something, so I guess the proper verb is: I finished something! Except, not really? I got Part 1 of 2 done, but it's better than 400 words here and another 200 somewhere else, rinse, repeat with different files the next day.

Anyway! When I went to see Star Trek Beyond, it was pretty clear (at least to me) that they'd mostly just ignored whatever the hell that mess was with Into Darkness, so my brain just skipped right over that one and started in on a sequel to my Kirk/Pike Trek Big Bang, Shining On The Quay, and it got longer and a little more involved than I expected, but there is definitely more to come.

So, yeah, \o/:

Starlit Wave, Kirk/Pike, ~3600 words (so far) of angsty schmoop, roughly summarized as Space!Husbands on R&R--sexy!times to follow.

The first part of this is all really boring stuff, but it's stressing me out, almost to the point of my not being able to function, and certainly past the point where I can enjoy much of anything, so here's my checklist and where I stand on getting through it. Read more... )

On the good side of things, I added another little bit to the Darcy/Sam fic I started last winter, loving you whether whether. This is looking like it's going to be a bunch of snapshot-type chapters, with no real giant plot arc, just Darcy and Sam finding their way together. I am pretty okay with this.

Title: take the world together
Fandom: Avengers: Age of Ultron | MCU (pre-canon)
Rating: Teen
Length: ~4800 words
Pairing: Laura/Clint
Notes: Part 4 of small town girl -- this backstory for the farm continues to bubble along in the back of my brain and every so often I manage to tease out another little bit.

Summary: "Surprise?" Laura offered.

"You could say that," Natasha answered, cradling her coffee in both hands.

topaz119: (Darcy)
Ugh, I am in one of those funks, where everything is annoying me. I have to curtail my interpersonal interaction (on- and off-line) during times like this, or I just stress myself out and end up in an ugly spiral that totally kills my New Year's Resolution ("Be less of a bitch this year than last.") Or possibly ends up with me fired for calling people names, which is also problematic.

So: good things…

  • I did go see Civil War on Saturday (with #2Son and D) and we all enjoyed it, even D, who is so not into the geek scene (of any flavor. He saves his energy for sports.) #2 and I had a blast. He loves Black Panther and was over the moon with his introduction. I think I've left maybe 2 comments about the movie overall, both flail-y squee, but not really spoilery, but… )

  • I spent most of Mother's Day writing Darcy's reaction to Civil War, which is always entertaining (and in this case, somewhat cathartic), plus: posting fic, \o/. This is Darcy from in deep with you darling, so she's been through all the ups and downs of the MCU -- Operation: Normal Life Is So F*cked.

  • My herb garden is going nuts this spring. I have more cilantro than I know what to do with, even with making batch after batch of a chimichurri-like sauce for steaks and chicken. The dill and basil and mint, I'm keeping up with, but the cilantro is trying to take over the world.

  • I finally have The Raven King in my hands and am blocking out time to read, \o/.

Title: in deep with you darling
Fandom: MCU (post-Thor, Avengers, CA:TWS, A:AoU, with a little AoS thrown in for fun)
    Rating: Mature
    Length: ~48,000 words
    Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Clint Barton
Notes: I kept it as close to canon as I could but I had to go a little AU for Age of Ultron (sorry, but I was 30,000 words in before Laura was dropped on us and there really wasn't any other way I could finish but to pretend that part hadn't happened. I promise to make it up with more Clint/Laura in my small town girl series, ♥)

Summary: Darcy could have, under normal circumstances, resisted the aesthetics (however awesome they are, and holy crap are they awesome), but there's an itch under her skin—apparently, nearly dying by giant, fire-breathing robots from space in the middle of Nowhere, New Mexico will start you questioning your life choices. Who knew?

I've got a deployment call coming up, help keep me from falling asleep at my desk!

Pick a question to ask me:
    1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing.
    2. Is there any specific ritual you go through while/before/after your writing?
    3. What is your absolute favorite kind of fic to write?
    4. Are there any other fic writers you admire? If so, who and why?
    5. How many words can you write if you sit down and concentrate intensely for an hour?
    6. First fic/pairing you wrote for? (If no pairing, describe the plot)
    7. Inspiration, time, or motivation. Choose two.
    8. Why do you choose to write?
    9. Do you ever have plans to write anything other than fic?
    10. What inspires you the most?
    11. Weirdest thing you’ve ever written/thought about writing/etc.?
    12. A fic you wish you had written better, and why?
    13. Favorite fic from another author?
    14. Your favorite side pairings to put in?
    15. Your guilty writing pleasure?
    16. Do you have structured ideas of how your story is supposed to go, or do you make it up as you write?
    17. Would you describe yourself as a fast writer?
    18. How old were you when you started writing?
    19. Why did you start writing?
    20. Four sentences from your work that you’re proud of.

So far behind on the daily posting, sorry! (So far behind on so many things, actually. ‘Tis the season, right?)

[livejournal.com profile] wendy asked me about my fic, specifically, what was my favorite, which is not an easy question to answer (I can’t even pick a favorite movie, so it’s no surprise I can’t pick when the stakes are more personal.)

I decided to talk about a few of my favoriteS (please do note the plural) and why they pop up in my brain as often as they do. These aren't the things I think are my "best" (whatever that means), just the ones that I think of with a little extra fondness. cutting because it got a little long )

Also, I am still open for questions/topics on the December Posting Meme, come give me something to talk about: DW or LJ.
    topaz119: (Laura)
Checking in to say hellooooo and wish the USians a belated Happy Turkey Day. I have yet to actually do the traditional feast as plans changed and I ended up at my mom’s house with Oldest and BabyBoy, while D and #2Son were at home/running down to see D’s father again. Since my mom doesn’t/can’t eat (and her mom’s stuffing recipe is one of the few things she actually misses eating and that would be hard for her to see/smell and not have) and Oldest doesn’t like anything of a standard T-giving dinner, I opted for a spaghetti feast, with homemade meatballs and garlic bread. Fun, and well-received, but not at all traditional. We’re going back home later today, though, and I’m planning on the whole involved deal later this weekend. Of course, every time I say that, people rush to tell me that I don’t have to go to all that trouble and I’m seriously starting to develop a few cracks in my Pleasant Fuck-Off ReplyTM. Normally I’m better at doing the semi-polite bitchslap to shut down people’s super-wrong assumptions about my life (because, let’s be real, you all know I’m looking forward to pulling together the whole feast, especially in my own kitchen, where all the knives are sharp and the herbs and spices are fresh, and I only know you from the internet--you'd think people who see me on a daily basis might have figured that out, too) but there are too many competing issues going on here (#2’s anxiety disorder, Mom’s health, my father-in-law’s health) and being polite to idiots is pretty far down on the list of things to spend my energy on.

    Anyway.

In more fun news, I managed to finish up another part of the Barton farm backstory I seem to be writing:

your hand in mine, we walk the miles, Laura/Clint (obvs), with guest starring roles by Cooper Barton and Nick Fury.

So, yeah, that’s a nice thing to have checked off the WiP list (I’m not done here--my brain has at least 3 more ideas percolating, including the origin story of Black Widow’s arrow necklace--but any little step forward is good by me.) Also, I went out and hunted down an icon for Laura since this seems to be something I'll be revisiting and I hate being unprepared for posting purposes. :D

Are we doing the December talking meme again this year? That was fun last year even if I had to bail two-thirds of the way through and finish up in January. Should I put up a list of dates? You know I like to hold forth and share my opinions about Things…
    topaz119: (path through the woods)
In news of the random, we finally broke down and bought a new (to us) car: a 2011 Toyota Sienna, which is one of the bigger minivans out there. It’s all black, with tinted back windows--it is in desperate need of a SHIELD logo for the back window. Nothing too flashy, just something textured and black. =D Unfortunately, it did not come with Melinda May to drive it (or Mack to keep it running.) Back in the real world, it has bluetooth! My podcasts/audiobooks never sounded so good. What I’m really excited about, though, is not having to juggle rentals for when we go somewhere long-distance with everyone. (I think it even has enough outlets for everyone to be able to run their electronics w/o killing their batteries, \o/.)

It was a quiet weekend—D’s father is still not back up to his usual strength, so D took BabyBoy down to help out w/farm-related stuff. There was homework to make up and I messed around in the kitchen enough to trash it a couple of times, but other than that, um… I bought a lot of candles? (Yankee Candle had a sale, even at their outlets, which just barely gets them into the realm of what I’m willing to pay for burning wax. I might have gone a little nuts, like 3 bags worth of nuts. But, sale!)

Also, I am still going with [livejournal.com profile] mini_wrimo and in the process, posted a short little start to a Darcy/Sam romance. I have no idea where I’m going with it, but sometimes that’s the most fun—when I’m just writing and seeing what’s coming up next. Anyway:
loving you whether whether, MCU, Darcy/Sam, PG-rated (for now.)

My mom was discharged from the hospital last week, so I went to her house to hang out for a while. I don't know that she's better, precisely, but she's very happy to be home, and goodness knows we all trust her visiting nurse more than just about anyone to take care of her complicated medical needs. My brother is still staying with her, and I overlapped with his wife being there, too, so that was good to see her. Mom is so worn down that she's falling asleep in between sentences, so we had a very low-key weekend, mostly going through 70 year old pictures. When she napped, did electronic housekeeping (updating her phone and tablet, getting the chromecast rebooted, showing my brother how to stream Netflix on it, etc) In the middle of that process, we (he and I) ended up watching Chef, which ended with him (he worked his way through grad school as a line cook/sous chef) getting all inspired in the kitchen. I made soup, he made flan and a Spanish tortilla and I don't even know what else, but it was very companionable.

And then I went by the barbecue place with the amazing spareribs (different than the barbecue place with the amazing pulled pork because I am married to a bbq snob) and loaded up, and googlemaps managed to find me a way back across the washed-out/flooded roads and I got home in time to feed the HoB ribs of the gods for dinner.

I am still doing fairly well with bringing my lunch—today is some of the soup I made for my brother (chicken with wild rice) and ham / cheddar / whole grain mustard on a pretzel roll. I'm experimenting with assorted noodles, too, to see if I can do some kind of makeshift ramen w/o the chemicals and sad little bits of dehydrated veggies that make up standard US versions. If I work it out, I'll let you know.

Also, it is really really bad (in a good way) to have a Starbucks in the lobby (aka, wow, the Toasted Graham Syrup is v. v. tasty.)

Alsoalso, if you want to prompt me with a pairing, I'm still happy to do more of the autumn ship meme.
