hah, you know I'm like that with het, right? (I only read it if it's been recced by someone I know/trust.) I mean, that's mostly because I've been reading on the slash side for so many years that I recognize names going back a decade or more and I'm less well-versed on the het side, so it's harder to wade through all the, uh, less-good stuff. (At least in X-Files het, it was easy to know if it was going to be good based on what Mulder & Scully called each other. One Fox or Dana and I was gone.)

Also, waaaaay back several fandoms ago, I had a friend who didn't read slash for years and then somehow she tumbled down to the Dark Side (not my fault, swear... I can't remember who got to claim that toaster.) So then, she wanted to know what to read, so we put out a call for everyone to rec their favorite slash stories. Fandom, as it is wont to do, responded with a vengeance. We printed everything out and took them to her and she had to buy an extra duffle bag to get it all home. I still count it as one of my Top 5 Fandom Moments. :D
