i'm sorry, i'm just rambling

Hellooooo. I took the day off to get a little of my center back after this crazy first few months with New!Company. I don't think I mentioned it here, but the woman I was slated to work with, who knew the domain and subject matter and who'd pressed for more help (ie, me), gave her notice the 2nd week I was on the job, so first it was a mad dash to learn as much from her as I could, and then it's been a concentrated effort to meet deadlines and learn multiple systems and processes and all that. In some ways, it was an excellent diversion from all that 2020 has turned into, which is good, but damn, my brain is tired. And I need to reassess what I'm doing with this NewWeirdNormal and how I need to take care of me and everyone else. So, I'm listening to Jack Johnson and doing laundry and rescuing the robo-vac (the dog hair is overwhelming around here. He's cute, but omg, he SHEDS) and beta-ing a fic and just chilllllling.

We (the crazy dog and I) took a long walk this morning where I started listening to an audiobook for yet another book club, this one at work, but it's one of Brene Brown's that I haven't read yet, and I'm cautiously excited about discussing it with my breakout group. At the very least, it's a small connection with the new company that's not me saying, 'uh, I don't know; I just started so let me get back to you when I figure out how to do it.'

If I can find shallots, I might also try Alison Roman's pasta recipe that's all over the internet these days. I'm bored with the stuff I'm cooking (and god knows I'm cooking a lot) so this is much more exciting that it should be. The boys are showing up with random recipes from r/GifRecipes, of all places, but we're definitely keeping the butter chicken and tikka masala in rotation, so what do I know? There's also a recipe from somewhere that substitutes potato chips for the potatoes in tortilla espanola that I'm either dying to try or totally horrified by. I'll let you know.

I'm still working on taxes, sigh. And D's disability retirement application. And I'm finally dealing with the implications of him being on 60% of his previous salary and what that actually looks like for a budget, which I have been putting off for months and months. (Spoiler alert: it's not horrible, but it's probably not bad that we're all at home these days. Though I did just take a hatchet to the cable package (because there are no sports these days and the kids all watch streaming anyway.))

Fannishly speaking, I wore my Resistance General t-shirt and switched my Zoom background to the Resistance base command center for May 4. I doubt anyone figured it out, but it made me feel good. (Also, nobody cares about that sort of thing at this new company--everyone has random backgrounds and there's no pushback about being 'professional'. I've also had several very intense, in-depth Trek discussions with one co-worker, so that's been a fun and refreshing change over the last few years.)
