catching up
Good morning, happy Sunday. I’m sitting in Midtown with Oldest waiting for an MRI (for them, nothing scary, just updating the baseline of their hearing issues). Radiology is running about 20 minutes late and I really could have used that for sleep this morning but here we are. For whatever reason, they’re playing the Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame on the TV. It’s very disconcerting. (And now we’ve moved on to Pocahontas, which is equally weird.)
The last few days have been a really lovely false fall – – with the mornings being cool and not terribly humid. I’m sure this will end shortly as it’s DragonCon time and what would DragonCon be without oppressive heat and humidity to go along with the mob? But I’m definitely enjoying it while it’s here.
Speaking of, we’re not doing the con this time; maybe next year I’ll be ready to deal with the crowds again. I felt like I wanted to go but the thought of all that is still overwhelming so, fingers crossed for next year.
#2Son and one of the cousins met at the house yesterday to watch their BPL teams play each other so that was fun. Tottenham obliterated Everton 4–0 but it was still nice to see them. I mean, they show up with Starbucks and manage the streaming connection without any assistance required for me, so it’s a pretty light lift on there hostessing side of things. (I did remove the topmost layers of dog hair and provided some snacks, but still, fairly low lift.)
A few weekends ago, BabyBoy and I drove up to the mountains in order to burn some almost-ready-to-expire hotel points at nice places. Asheville (where we stayed) has excellent restaurants and bookstores and vintage shops, so that hit all our requirements for a little bit of a break. Oldest and #2 had gone to Chicago and the Wisconsin Renfaire the weekend before, so Asheville was our companion trip. I posted some pictures on Insta if you know me there.
In reading news, I have blown through ACOTAR this summer. I have to say that the first book is fine-ish, but then it’s less that the second book is where the story picks up and more like the second book is the back half of the first book. Everything that bothered me about the first book was really just the low point of the actual story arc. As far as the pacing goes, it’s really a trilogy with a Christmas novella and then the start of a duology rather than a five book series. BabyBoy has decided we need to get into Brandon Sanderson, so we’re listening to the first of the Stormlight Archives because why not go for the 48-hour audiobook? Yeah, I’ll let you know how that turn out.
I both can and can’t believe we’re almost through August. It’s been a good summer but the rest of the year is going to be super-busy so I feel like this train we’re on is about to reach the point where I’m just hanging on for dear life until I can catch my breath in January. We have a wedding in September, one that I decided to drive rather than fly to, so I can tack on a stop at my brother’s mountain house & then a quick side trip to see my aunties. Then we’re back for a week and it’s Beach Week, which is, as you know, always A Lot. Then in October we’ve got Food & Wine in Orlando and then Halloween. Then it’s my birthday and we’re in the mad dash through Thanksgiving and Christmas and back to Orlando for New Year’s Eve. Whoosh.
And somewhere in there I need to buy a car, but that’s another story, lol.
Ciao, darlings, have a lovely day.
