topaz119: (Laura)
Checking in to say hellooooo and wish the USians a belated Happy Turkey Day. I have yet to actually do the traditional feast as plans changed and I ended up at my mom’s house with Oldest and BabyBoy, while D and #2Son were at home/running down to see D’s father again. Since my mom doesn’t/can’t eat (and her mom’s stuffing recipe is one of the few things she actually misses eating and that would be hard for her to see/smell and not have) and Oldest doesn’t like anything of a standard T-giving dinner, I opted for a spaghetti feast, with homemade meatballs and garlic bread. Fun, and well-received, but not at all traditional. We’re going back home later today, though, and I’m planning on the whole involved deal later this weekend. Of course, every time I say that, people rush to tell me that I don’t have to go to all that trouble and I’m seriously starting to develop a few cracks in my Pleasant Fuck-Off ReplyTM. Normally I’m better at doing the semi-polite bitchslap to shut down people’s super-wrong assumptions about my life (because, let’s be real, you all know I’m looking forward to pulling together the whole feast, especially in my own kitchen, where all the knives are sharp and the herbs and spices are fresh, and I only know you from the internet--you'd think people who see me on a daily basis might have figured that out, too) but there are too many competing issues going on here (#2’s anxiety disorder, Mom’s health, my father-in-law’s health) and being polite to idiots is pretty far down on the list of things to spend my energy on.

In more fun news, I managed to finish up another part of the Barton farm backstory I seem to be writing:

your hand in mine, we walk the miles, Laura/Clint (obvs), with guest starring roles by Cooper Barton and Nick Fury.

So, yeah, that’s a nice thing to have checked off the WiP list (I’m not done here--my brain has at least 3 more ideas percolating, including the origin story of Black Widow’s arrow necklace--but any little step forward is good by me.) Also, I went out and hunted down an icon for Laura since this seems to be something I'll be revisiting and I hate being unprepared for posting purposes. :D

Are we doing the December talking meme again this year? That was fun last year even if I had to bail two-thirds of the way through and finish up in January. Should I put up a list of dates? You know I like to hold forth and share my opinions about Things…

In news of the random, we finally broke down and bought a new (to us) car: a 2011 Toyota Sienna, which is one of the bigger minivans out there. It’s all black, with tinted back windows--it is in desperate need of a SHIELD logo for the back window. Nothing too flashy, just something textured and black. =D Unfortunately, it did not come with Melinda May to drive it (or Mack to keep it running.) Back in the real world, it has bluetooth! My podcasts/audiobooks never sounded so good. What I’m really excited about, though, is not having to juggle rentals for when we go somewhere long-distance with everyone. (I think it even has enough outlets for everyone to be able to run their electronics w/o killing their batteries, \o/.)

It was a quiet weekend—D’s father is still not back up to his usual strength, so D took BabyBoy down to help out w/farm-related stuff. There was homework to make up and I messed around in the kitchen enough to trash it a couple of times, but other than that, um… I bought a lot of candles? (Yankee Candle had a sale, even at their outlets, which just barely gets them into the realm of what I’m willing to pay for burning wax. I might have gone a little nuts, like 3 bags worth of nuts. But, sale!)

Also, I am still going with [ profile] mini_wrimo and in the process, posted a short little start to a Darcy/Sam romance. I have no idea where I’m going with it, but sometimes that’s the most fun—when I’m just writing and seeing what’s coming up next. Anyway:
loving you whether whether, MCU, Darcy/Sam, PG-rated (for now.)

My mom was discharged from the hospital last week, so I went to her house to hang out for a while. I don't know that she's better, precisely, but she's very happy to be home, and goodness knows we all trust her visiting nurse more than just about anyone to take care of her complicated medical needs. My brother is still staying with her, and I overlapped with his wife being there, too, so that was good to see her. Mom is so worn down that she's falling asleep in between sentences, so we had a very low-key weekend, mostly going through 70 year old pictures. When she napped, did electronic housekeeping (updating her phone and tablet, getting the chromecast rebooted, showing my brother how to stream Netflix on it, etc) In the middle of that process, we (he and I) ended up watching Chef, which ended with him (he worked his way through grad school as a line cook/sous chef) getting all inspired in the kitchen. I made soup, he made flan and a Spanish tortilla and I don't even know what else, but it was very companionable.

And then I went by the barbecue place with the amazing spareribs (different than the barbecue place with the amazing pulled pork because I am married to a bbq snob) and loaded up, and googlemaps managed to find me a way back across the washed-out/flooded roads and I got home in time to feed the HoB ribs of the gods for dinner.

I am still doing fairly well with bringing my lunch—today is some of the soup I made for my brother (chicken with wild rice) and ham / cheddar / whole grain mustard on a pretzel roll. I'm experimenting with assorted noodles, too, to see if I can do some kind of makeshift ramen w/o the chemicals and sad little bits of dehydrated veggies that make up standard US versions. If I work it out, I'll let you know.

Also, it is really really bad (in a good way) to have a Starbucks in the lobby (aka, wow, the Toasted Graham Syrup is v. v. tasty.)

Alsoalso, if you want to prompt me with a pairing, I'm still happy to do more of the autumn ship meme.
topaz119: (it's the great pumpkin)
I am having an awesome time with the autumn ship meme--do come play with me!

Give me a pairing and I'll tell you who:
- Chooses the pumpkin
- Carves the pumpkin
- Gets scared and clings to the other in a haunted house
- Matching costume ideas
- Makes a cozy blanket fort to cuddle in
- Steals the others candy
- Accidentally gets lost in a corn maze
- Tells spooky stories to scare the other
- Collects cool looking leaves

Current and previous fandoms welcome, crossovers are cool, characters from any books or TV shows you've seen me mention are good, and I can probably fake this for most fandoms except TW, bandom, and 99% of the anime fandoms.

The original posts are here on DW and here on LJ, but it never fails that my friending isn't in sync and the LJ is locked down, so I'm putting everything here so I can link to this post on DW.

So far I've got:

Walsh/Beaumont (The Unusuals) )

Clint/Darcy (MCU) )

Kate/Clint (and Kate & Clint) (Marvel 616) )

Sherlock & John (Sherlock) )

Clint/Coulson (MCU) )

It was my turn for a Muggle weekend, as the highlights of the last few days include such exciting entries as getting the oil changed in the car, letting the professionals get it clean, getting my hair cut, 11 loads of laundry (!!), and multiple trips to grocery stores, Costco, and the famers market. I meant to do some serious baking, as we are out of the good stuff for snacks and lunches, but my body decided it had had enough of the crazy schedule of the last month and surrendered to a drippy little cold, so I shoved all the butter and chocolate into the fridge and took myself off for extended showers and naps.

All very exciting.

It wasn't completely mundane stuff, though, as I managed to finally finish off the next part of the Clint/Darcy fic, the part I've been working on since last November. It almost had a birthday, and I was beginning to think I wasn't ever going to finish it, but once I stopped trying to write what I thought I was going to write and started paying attention to what I should have been writing, I got them to the point they needed to be at, and got it posted.

in deep with you darling (part 3 is the latest update)

also, ugh, I let comments to that languish for a shamefully long time, really very embarrassing on my part, so I made myself sit down and answer them (all of them, I hope), which was has been a very satisfying line to draw through my to-do list. (Am I the only person who uses a strikethrough font for their online to-do list? I mean, evernote holds all my lists and notes and whatnot, and I actually have a note for completed tasks, where I move things that are done, but first I have to change the font to strikethrough, for maximum aesthetics, I guess. And then I take the strikethrough off when I move the line item to the Done note. I don't ask my brain for explanations these days; I'm happy enough that it's still functioning.)

We move offices at the end of the week, which means I have to be packed up by Friday, which means I will be packing during all my conference calls. Thank goodness for wireless headsets.

Title: sneakin' up on your blind side
Fandom: MCU
Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Clint Barton
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Length: ~ 4000 words
Notes/Warnings: One part RL being a total bitch in many different aspects (money, family, home, work) + one part you need a rock not a rolling stone passing a (frankly unbelievable) milestone in hits == my brain deciding fluffy smut was the answer.

Summary: “Home?” Clint asks, and Darcy means to just agree, but when she opens her mouth, all that comes out is a wordless, embarrassing noise (ok, whimper) at the thought of their little converted basement apartment on Capitol Hill. She knows it’s not anything all that great, and that they could have been living the good life in Georgetown in a Stark-funded condo, but it’s the first place she’s ever had as an actual adult-type person, one who is a productive member of society, and it’s home.

Fandom: Marvel (Hawkeye/Young Avengers) AU
Pairing: Kate Bishop/Clint Barton
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Length: ~ 9700 words
Notes/Warnings: Written for [community profile] femmeremix, inspired by [ profile] subjunctive's coffee shop AU, Espresso Con Panna. I personally love Kate and Clint's platonic relationship in Hawkeye, but hey, what's fic for if not to say, 'well, yeah, but what if...?'

Summary: Of course, some of the people Kate was taking care of were more interesting than others, but hey, she was reasonably sure a jury of her peers (i.e., single and right-down-the-middle-Kinsey, male or female) would not convict her of bad taste when it came to making sure Mr. Espresso Con Panna lounging in the corner was super-definitely taken care of.

With a personal touch.

Yeah, yeah, it's almost February, I know, I know, but seriously, I only just got my Christmas tree down. And last week was #2Son's end of semester, so that vortex sucked enough of my brain power and mental stability that reading/watching new things were totally not happening, so the Wednesday book meme is a copy/paste of last week.

Plus, I've done this since 2004; I'm not letting being late stop me from starting my 2nd decade of round-ups.

Previous years: 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004

Good morning, my lovelies!

(Yes, this is weird Monday morning cheeriness from me, but I'm not going to question it.)

It is T-minus 3 days until DragonCon and things are starting to fall into place. Most importantly, WHOOHOO, there is an acceptable hotel in the bag – the Hyatt Place (not the RiotHyatt, but the one a block north.) I'd still like the Hilton, but this actually has many pluses, not the least of which are free internet and free breakfast (which is a considerable plus, given how the HoB can run up my AmEx balance with food.) If BabyBoy wasn't planning on extensive gaming (at the Hilton until all hours of the night) I'd be super-happy w/the HP.

In cosplay news, we spent a ridiculous amount of time putting together BabyBoy's Attack on Titan Survey Corps harness/vertical maneuvering belt/thingie (I just procure; I have no idea what half this stuff is.) We got the shoulder stuff sorted out, but the leg straps remain a mystery. The Skyrim Thieves' Guild/Maven Blackbriar rigs are looking pretty good—except we're probably going to pass out from the heat, because, while we've had a semi-reasonable summer, we're looking at 90+ degrees for the weekend, ugh.

I also took a really long, hard look at my schedule and all and decided that there was no way I was going to get a draft done for the [ profile] marvel_bang deadline, so… I let go of trying to make the story I've been working on be done for that. I mean, I probably *could* have made the draft, but at the expense of some seriously late nights and giving my accompanying artist/vidder/mixer an even messier draft than I usually do (which is seriously saying something, because I've been known to add 30,000 words after turning in Big Bang drafts.) While this is a sensible decision, it made me a raving bitch grumpy when I thought about it. And I could tell I'd be tempted to try to get a draft done, which was going to kill DragonCon (see, I did that last year, but I only had a couple thousand words to go at this point, and it still made the run-up to DC nuts, and this year was going to be much worse, but try telling that to my brain), sooooo, what I ended up doing was finishing off the first part (which needed less than 500 words and a good edit) and posting it as a WiP, which basically removes it from [ profile] marvel_bang eligibility. Tricksy, but effective.

I do actually know where I'm going with this whole thing, and I definitely will finish it (hopefully before I get jossed by Agents of SHIELD and *definitely* before I get Jossed by Age of Ultron, so if you'd like to check it out, it's on AO3, in deep with you darling, ~7900 words (for now), Clint/Darcy, post-Thor (also, for now)

round up

topaz119: (BlackHawkBW)
The last few weeks have been a little more bonkers than usual, including the weekends, so when I say I didn't do anything but mess around in the kitchen and listen to podcasts and poke at various writing projects this weekend, I don't think it really conveys how truly excellent it felt to have a quiet couple of days.
In the kitchen, I finally used all the blueberries the boys have picked recently to make Martha's Blueberry Cobbler. It's a biscuit-y cobbler top (though biscuits made with heavy cream, so it's not like it's particularly light) but it was easy enough. To go with it, I made a Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream made in the food processor, as described on Food & Wine, which worked out super well. And since I was on a roll, I also tried the sliced-frozen-banana + food processor=soft-serve banana ice cream trick (I hesitate to call it a recipe, as it is literally just frozen bananas) and despite everything looking like a gray, glue-y mess at the start, it did actually turn out to be an unqualified success. I added about a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa and whoaaaaaaa, it was awesome. I feel that there are many occasions when chocolate-banana ice cream w/no dairy or sugar or fat would keep me from a screaming fit. (I feel like I should also mention that the HoB gave multiple thumbs up for this, too, and you know damn well they could care less about anything but the taste, so I assure you this isn't an instance of 'this tastes okay for what it is' but rather that it really does taste awesome (if you like bananas, obvs.))

I also kind of fell down the Disney World fandom abyss and somehow ended up listening to about 3 hours worth of speculation about what might or might not be coming in the next few years. (Bottom-line, there are gonna be lots of construction walls but Hollywood Studios might actually end up being navigable and StarWarsLand is coming. Also, Anna and Elsa are never ever going away, but you probably knew that already.) I find I still could care less about the actual events of Avatar (not the last Airbender Avatar, but the Pocahontas-in-space one) but I am still surprisingly excited to see the world around the events. There might also have been a few additions to the bad-for-you-but-hey-it's-vacation list of foods (BLT-ranch fries, BabyBoy is ready to go now) and some preliminary discussions about the plan of attack for the Food & Wine Festival this year. So, yeah, not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning while the laundry was trundling along.

…and writing… My [ profile] marvel_bang is progressing (which is good news after having lost a thousand words and then getting caught up in the mess of school starting again/#2 finishing a semester.) I think it's falling into a three-part structure and the first part is almost done, the second is solidly in progress and I at least know why the third part happens. So that's good.

In the same crash/reboot/crash sequence, I also lost almost everything I had on a [ profile] be_compromised ficathon prompt, and that really stalled everything out there, but I did have fun with the three-sentence mini ficathon, and ended up writing a bunch over the weekend (all Clint/Natasha)---

The Female Gaze (prompt: these hips don't lie)

between the rock and the hard place (prompt: nowhere left to run)

nerds in love (prompt: Movie night: Star Trek or Star Wars?), plus [ profile] alphaflyer (whose prompt it was) responded with a little bit more, which I also added to.

the family that spies together (prompt: Everybody just assumed that Natasha didn't want/couldn't have children)

trust fall (prompt: being forced into corporate teamwork event)

It's been a long time since I've done one of these. Aside from how I haven't lost my love of run-on sentences (look away, [personal profile] without_me, look away!), I'd forgotten how much fun it is to try to distill a story down this far.

Between my friend leaving for a new job and the less-than-wonderful news about WonderDog, it was a very long week and I knew I was happy for the weekend to be upon me, but then [ profile] blurintofocus posted this bit about how Sebastian Stan and Jonathon Groff were perfect Disney princes in loooooove. They stopped at a critical point and threw it out on the internet for more and before I knew what I was doing, I was playing along to write the happy ending.

Does this count as my first tumblr fic?
