only a little bit late

1. What did you do in 2015 that you’d never done before?
I finally went and did the whole Lord of the Rings Extended Edition marathon, complete with all seven Hobbit meals. And I did both the spring and fall readathons, so that was fun. I mean, cooking and reading: not exactly anything new for me, but new in concentrated format.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
eh, you know my resolution is always to be less of a bitch last year than the year before, and... it went okay. It wasn't the best year, but I really only remember two screaming incidents. This year, I think I'm going for focus. Just keeping the distractions out and doing the important things. And trying to be less of a bitch than I was.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, not this year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My dad did not technically die in 2015, but in the last weeks of 2014. The effects still rippled all through this past year.

5. What countries did you visit?
hah, I was happy to get out of Georgia a couple of times.

6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
Oh, you know, balance. A positive cash flow.

7. What date(s) from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
At some point in August, #2Son finished high school, which was a huge relief, even if it only lasted for a few weeks before the next worry started. But hey, one step at a time.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Not coming completely unglued.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not staying completely glued.

10. Did you suffer any illness or injury?
Just my nifty ongoing auto-immune disorder.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
A new caaaaarrrr, yay. A sous-vide immersion circulator. More fun times in the kitchen!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My brother and his wife have been absolute rock stars with my mom.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Can you say the Republican debates? I knew you could.

14. Where did most of your money go?
School tuition, the other half of the AC that we hadn't replaced in 2013, WonderDog's vet bills, with fun money going to Beach Week, DragonCon, and Disney World.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
#2Son and I spent most of the year reading Star Wars teasers and muttering 'please don't suck' under our breath. We were/are so very happy when it didn't.

16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
Shut Up and Dance -- it was the only song I knew from the 2015 poolside trivia game at our WDW hotel during the holiday trip. The kids all laughed at how excited I was to actually know even one.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? About the same. It was a long year, kids.
ii. thinner or fatter? A tiny bit thinner
iii. richer or poorer? A tiny bit richer (or less in debt), but not really anything that you'd notice, sigh.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Seen more of my friends. It's too easy to get sucked into the daily grind.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
I try really hard not to get sucked into the rumor mill at work, but it's starting to get overwhelming.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
We always spend Christmas Eve with D's family, and I'd offered to make dinner, but got over-ruled in favor of a grocery store turkey. The evening itself turned out pretty okay, especially since we had live-in girlfriends (*gasp*, horrors) and the girlfriend-turned-second-wife and her kids in attendance (you do not want to know how much disapproval this generated.) Christmas Day, we spent at home, which, after we spent the first hour of the morning pulling area rugs and furniture out of the way of the leaking in the basement, was mostly just lounging about in pajamas and opening gifts. The day after Christmas, I took Oldest and Babyboy over to my mom's to celebrate with her and my brother's family while D stayed home with #2Son who was not having a good holiday season anxiety-wise. The 3 of us also went down to WDW to celebrate New Year's with L & her family, so there was a lot (" ") of driving in there.

22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
Technically speaking, no, but hey, still married, so that counts.

23. How many one-night stands?
uh, how about a couple of weekends away with D?

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Agent Carter -- I really loved seeing Peggy start to make a life for herself after the war.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Same answer as last year: Hate is way too much energy to expend on the idiots of the world. I send money to those opposing them. It's much more satisfying.

26. What was the best book you read?
I think my favorite was Uprooted, by Naomi Novik. It sucked me in so hard I totally ignored the chaos of Beach Week to read it in a day. And then I had a classic case of book hangover and I couldn't get into any of the other books I'd planned for the week. :D

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Like the rest of the world, Hamilton. I am crossing all appendages that they manage to film a performance.

28. What did you want and get?
I got a new (to me) car, which I had been putting off for over a year so that I really, REALLY appreciate it now.

29. What did you want and not get?
I want my kid to not have to suffer from crippling anxieties. Anything else is gravy.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Hah, you have to ask? TFA. (I really did like The Martian, but nothing is really ever going to compare with Star Wars in my heart.)

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 53, and ... I don't think we did anything? I usually end up counting the trip to the Food & Wine Festival at WDW as a birthday trip, though, so don't feel bad. My birthday was just in the middle of the week and the new commute was kicking my ass and I'd been back and forth to my mom's a lot during the month before, so I don't think we did anything.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
See above re: kid and anxiety issues. I would have also liked to have had a boss who has some idea of what it is that I do.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
Is it clean?

34. What kept you sane?
audiobooks and podcasts in the car and on the treadmill. oh, and Waze. Holy cow, I've lived around here for more than 20 years and that app routes me through places I had no idea existed.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Renner still hasn't loosened his grip on my brain, but oh dear lord, Oscar Isaac.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Are people really so stupid to think that Donald Trump has *any* clue about the presidency?

37. Who did you miss?
My co-worker, V -- we'd worked together for more than 10 years and 2 companies. She couldn't face the new commute (which I don't blame her) and found a new job, which I'm very happy for her, but I seriously miss seeing her every day. Yammering at each other on facebook just isn't the same.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Oldest's girlfriend is lovely.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015.
You're going to have to do it, so you might as well be organized about it.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain -- I'm So Tired, The Beatles

I still have to read Uprooted. I've heard good things about it.

It's so not fun, :(

I should take your advice about being organized in doing life's many doings! I am in some cases, like work, but after that it kind of fizzes out somehow.

I'm not a naturally organized person--I have to work at it a lot and it's never any fun, but this year I really did just grit my teeth and pay better attention because I was drowning in all the not-fun but necessary stuff and not having any time for fun things at all. So I guess it was the lesser of two evils...
