topaz119: (happy endings)

friday really needed to happen before today

So, yesterday was one of those days where I was unzipping my dress as I walked in the door, walking out of my shoes (they were flats, but still not clogs or boots or flip-flops), and stripping off the bra and spanx and the rest of it by the time I got to the bedroom.

(I've been trying to wear something other than my standard jeans & boots at least once/week but it's still a straaaaange concept.)

And then I turned the HoB loose on all the leftovers in the fridge, ignored the taxes that still needed to be done (I'm going to have to file an extension anyway, as one of D's 1099s is still out there in the ether, so I'm having trouble keeping my focus there) and flopped down on the couch to see what I might have stashed in my Netflix queue from random blogs/podcasts/twitter recs.

If nothing else, I figured I could always rewatch The Princess Bride for the gazillionth time, but I ended up with Beyond the Lights, which is the dreariest title for the best romantic movie I've seen in forever. Not a rom-com, but a straight-up love story, a contemporary romance translated to the screen, with a pop/r&b singer and the LAPD officer who gets sucked into her life. Awesome casting: Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, with Minnie Driver as her mother and Danny Glover as his father, and written/directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball). I have a few quibbles with the plot (like, I'm not sure how he still has a job after about halfway through the movie) but if I'd had any more energy, I would have swooned at his [true] declaration of love. A+++, will happily watch again.

(I am pretty sure I snagged the rec from the Smart Bitches podcast, from a discussion of how marketing gets derailed when the characters are not white, in that this is pure, unadulterated romance, but did not get marketed as such. It deserves so much more than it got, for sure, so I am sharing the love with you all.)

And then I turned the HoB loose on all the leftovers in the fridge

I love being at the stage of parenting where I can look at the kid, tell him "It's leftover night. Whatever is in a tuppy is fair game if you nuke it yourself" and ignore his emptying half a dozen tupperware containers with pop tarts for dessert.

Eventually, he's going to move out and I've going to have to remember what to do with leftovers.

(Mom tried to show me a neat trick for keeping bread from going stale. I ... don't have that problem. I buy three to four loaves of bread a week; it doesn't go stale.)

Good luck on chasing down the wayward 1099.

Wasn't it good?! I saw it in the theaters and recced it to people I knew, but it was one of those movies that just had terrible PR and no one super famous and you knew it was going to vanish into obscurity. *sigh*

Thank you for that rec! I'm requesting it from the library RTFN and ITA that Friday needed to be about three days ago. Weekend ahoy, Miss Missy. You can do it!

Oh, I hope you like it--I found it to be just unashamedly romantic and sweet and sexy.

The weekend is here, and there is pizza in the oven--I hope you've made it, too!
