quick catch-up

Hey, y’all, how’s everyone? The crazy life here continues…

Beach Week happened again, \o/. This was our 28th time, omg, 29 if you count the wedding week that kicked it all off. I posted a few pictures and videos on IG if you know my name. I had to laugh--all of them are these peaceful shots of the beach and ocean (except for the videos of giant unicorn sprinkler in the pool), but BabyBoy’s WhatsApp is filled with the chaos of 21 people roaming about the house at all hours of the day and night (eg, the Night Owls finally crashing around 4 in the morning and the first of the Morning Glories (to use my mother’s terms) putting on coffee around 5 a.m. so they can fish/walk/run on the beach as the sun rises. It’s never really quiet there.

The highlight of the week, I think, came when we threw three beef tenderloins in a cooler with a sous vide circulator, still in their original vacuum seal packaging, and ended up with amaaaazing beef 3 hours & a brief trip to the grill later. Zounds, but that was EASY.

I didn’t read much this year--most afternoons were spent half-asleep in a floatie in the pool--but L & I did walk a half-marathon in the mornings (not all at once, but our mileage added up very well.) Plus, our resident nutritionist (one of the kids), on loan from an internship with the NFL, gave us gold stars for many food decisions (literally. She had a packet of actual gold star stickers and handed them out liberally.) We still ate/drank way too much, but some small healthy decisions were made. We did grill a boatload of veggies…

All of which was probably good, as D is having heart complications (scary-high BP, angina, etc) so my poor Southern good ol’ boy is having to think about what he’s eating for the first time in his life. He is Very Not Happy to hear all the things off the table except for very very rare occasions. (I have, so far, resisted the petty urge to point out how many times over the years he’s made comments about ‘just doing it’ wrt to diet when I’m the one dealing with it all. I would like my gold star now, please.) So that’s complicating my cooking life now, b/c he still doesn’t do a lot of the stuff I’ve adapted over the years for healthy eating so I have to think about things that will make him feel undeprived yet still work with the healthy food goal, which I am doing b/c I would like the doof to stick around for a while yet. (I should note that he still has a 30” waist and is out on the ball field almost every day; it’s mostly bad genetics. His tiny little mama had stroke before she was 50 & his dad has a pacemaker, etc.)

Back in RL, BabyBoy is doing the Shakespeare thing again this summer, so I’m running him down into the city in the mornings, but he can at least ride the subway home in the evenings (life actually begins later in the morning thanks to HOV lanes if I take him down rather than dropping him off at the train station so we are commuting buddies.) He nearly got adopted by an English family when he searched out a pub for the ENG-COL game and changed into his national team jersey while trying to explain that in the US, 18 is not old enough for a stout.

I had a job interview yesterday, that was sort of interesting. We’ll see... They say they want to move fast, but that gets said a lot & it’s not always true. Also on the work front, we’re doing a potluck so I’m making berry cobbler b/c it turns out nobody really knew what it was.

I’m doing Camp Nano to push the novel along and I have multiple fic ideas half-started, so maybe the writing dry spell is easing off. But first I have to go finish cleaning out the fridge, as it is a nightmare.

And if that doesn't work, it was supposed to be two gold stars of your very own. Hope Mr. Topaz and his 30 inch waist gets that BP under control! xo

Good luck with the job interview and family health and stuff!

I signed up for Camp NaNo, unfortunately this has barely motivated me. Sigh. RL is so tedius yet time-consuming.

What?? YOu aren't sharing pics of the sea of empty bottles this year? I feel cheated. *g* . Yay beach week! Love the gold star idea. You could carry that on with poor D.

Yay super-exciting life update!
