fic writing round-up 2012

Previous years: 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 |2004

In posting order (Links go to AO3, but everything is also on [ profile] t_fic in roughly the reverse order than shown here.)

The Eyes Have It, NCIS, gen, Tony, 1000 words === My [ profile] picfor1000 entry. Team banter is a challenge in 1000 words.

Not Quite The Morning After, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Hunt/Brandt, ~1400 words === I SWEAR I was fine until I stumbled across the MI4 kink meme and then... I don’t even know what happened, but I fell down this rabbit hole and haven’t come up for air since. This is the first kink meme fill, for Ethan bottoming.

Love and Other Mission Anomalies, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Hunt/Brandt, ~13,200 words === Kink meme fill #2. H/C. I don’t even know.

ka ua (you and I), Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve, ~1320 words === Lightning schmoop challenge fill. They still make me smile.

Takin’ Care of Business, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, team (background Hunt/Brandt), ~4300 words === Kink meme fill #3. Again with the IDEK.

the delicate art of partnercare, The Unusuals, gen, partners, canon pairings, ~1800 words === There needed to be more of this show! My subconscious handed this up without me even asking for it.

This Time Next Year, Supernatural, gen, ~5000 words === Lightning schmoop challenge fill, and the best example of how every time I think I might have run out of Winchester things to write, I’ll do something like write 5000 words between when I get home from work and finally collapse into bed.

you need a rock not a rolling stone, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Darcy/Clint, ~37,000 words === aka, The Story That Kept Me Sane Last Spring. It was a terrifically fun way to break into the Avengers fandom.

doesn’t matter if I bleed, The Avengers, Clint/Coulson, ~24,500 words === Of course I had to write a fix-it. That’s what fic is for, right?

offered me a shade of blue, The Bourne Legacy, Marta/Aaron, ~3800 words === I swear this one wasn’t my fault. I mean, I was powerless in the face of the virgin!aaron discussions ranging about my flist. I couldn’t *not* write it, okay?

hard to dance with a devil on your back, The Unusuals, Beaumont/Walsh, ~6000 words === A little Beaumont/Walsh hook-up backstory. Again, my subconscious offered it up without even having been asked.

So, if you add that up, it's around 102,000 words posted, which was less than 2011, but still pretty outstanding for me.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you never would've guessed? Oh, jeez. NEVER would I have guessed I’d write a character played by Tom Cruise. I have NO IDEA.

What's your own favorite story of the year? I think... you need a rock not a rolling stone. The snarky banter was ultimately way too much fun.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? (Inserting my standard objection to 'risk' as that is something that can result in bodily harm/grave financial damage, not feeling uncomfortable in a hobby) Posting things in the Avengers/MCU fandom is freaking nerve-wracking. I mean, even not writing the big pairings, I was kind of overwhelmed by the reaction you get.

My best story of this year: I have to go with doesn’t matter if i bleed. It was hard to get it how I wanted it, but in the end, I really like what I finally got out there.

My most popular story of this year: you need a rock not a rolling stone, hands down. It just kept bubbling along.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: hmmm, I think I have to go with This Time Next Year. It isn’t the story with the fewest hits, but given the relative size of the SPN fandom, it kind of just disappeared into the forest.

Most fun story to write: the delicate art of partnercare -- I watched the show, I was sad there weren’t more episodes, I wrote the story. No muss, no fuss. And I was really happy with the tone and dialog and everything.

Story with the single sexiest moment: IMO? Aaron fighting to stay in control in offered me a shade of blue? But I have a really hard time judging sex scenes--by the time I get them smoothed out, they're just so many words on the screen so I'll bow to your judgement on this one.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Yeah, you do not want to know how many ‘oh, god, I can’t believe I’m reading about a character played by Tom Cruise’ reactions I got. To which I could only reply: I can’t believe I’m *writing* one.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I’ve been coming at Clint/Natasha from oblique angles ever since I saw the movie, because she is damn hard to get right (especially given all the crappy comics-verse characterizations I have to throw out of my head) and the ones who wrote her the best tend to pair her with Bucky (I’m really working hard to ignore Daredevil, okay?) which means I’m fighting off that, too, when I try to work out her with Clint. So, both rolling stone and doesn’t matter if i bleed had me really working to get the partner vibe right, but I think that has to be the basis for everything else, and wow, I will shut up about this now.

Hardest story to write: doesn’t matter if i bleed I don’t exactly remember making a decision to have Clint be so intensely closed off from everyone and everything, including himself, but goddamn, that made it hard to write.

Biggest Disappointment: There are so many things on my google drive that I haven’t figured out how to finish. It was also really weird not to be doing [ profile] spn_j2_bigbang even though I was right in the middle of 2 Big Bang length Avengers stories at that point and barely had time to breathe.

Biggest Surprise: hah. At this time last year, I was watching MI4 and going, ‘oh yeah, the guy from The Hurt Locker.’ 100,000 words later...

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: The epilogue to doesn’t matter if i bleed. I’m not sure it’s unintentional at this point, because I can see it in so many things that I write and love, but found families do it for me. It showed up a *lot* this year. It’s not a new one for me but it’s apparently still a big one.

Fic-writing goals for 2012: Finish things! Write the Kirk/McCoy Housesitter fusion before the next movie comes out. Really, seriously write a post-Avengers Clint/Natasha. Do something with the almost all the way but not quite there yet Steve/Tony/Pepper before IM3 messes with canon. Finish the Steve/Kono undercover fic. And the Jane-centric MI4 fic. And the Kirk/Pike/Gaila sequel to Shining On The Quay.

Hah, yeah, that should keep me busy for a DECADE.

With MI4 I never thought I would be writing slash with a Tom Cruise character in it. It was just kind of movie.

The Jane centric MI4 fic sounds interesting. I've been craving more fic with her in it and its hard to find.
