work-from-home wednesday

It's raining. again. reminding myself (AGAIN) that at least it's not cold (my house may mudslide down the ridge, though.)

Moving on and snagging this from [personal profile] musesfool, the Wednesday "What I'm Reading" meme (though please do not expect anything grand or in depth. Reading is on my list of things that keep me from turning into a raving bitch but I am at the point where my brain can only deal with the lightest of the light reads)

What I'm Reading

A Lady Awakened by Cecilia Grant, which is Regency era romance and is... not bringing me back to it in any great hurry. It's not bad, and I'm actually kind of impressed how she's handling a pretty dicey premise without making me hate both lead characters, but I'm also not dying to know what happens next. It's been on my table, untouched, for almost a week. I think it's a sign.

Dark Road to Darjeeling by Deanna Raybourne -- one of the Lady Julia/Brisbane series of Victorian mysteries. I'm a little behind in this series; my mom is waiting impatiently for me to catch up. Julia is making me want to smack her; I'm hoping things will pick up once Brisbane arrives on the scene. He's always good for a rousing argument or twenty.

Roselynde by Roberta Gellis -- one of my all-time historical romance favorites and it was recently free/supercheap for the Kindle.

Prince of Pleasure: The Prince of Wales and the Making of the Regency - an actual biography. Prinny was an ass, in case you missed that.

There are also assorted Shakespearean plays (Hamlet, Richard III, Tempest) for homeschool and drama queen requirements (those are separate kids, btw), and I'm sure I'm about to get hit with another non-fiction book for the reading group we do at the office.

What I Just Finished

The Twelve Clues of Christmas - the latest of the Her Royal Spyness light, pre-WWII mysteries, this one set in the middle of a "proper" English holiday celebration. It was close to a perfect read while in the car with the boys going to and fro to assorted relatives' houses for the holiday.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking - I've always called myself a sociable introvert, but wow. Even moreso than I realized.

What I'm Reading Next

I think, Wonder Show, by Hannah Rodgers Barnaby -- Depression era YA, mystery -- the circus setting looked intriguing and the library just pinged me that it was on the hold shelf waiting for me.

So, you know I'm a fellow sociable introvert, yeah? Is Quiet worth reading if you already know that about yourself? Did it give you new insight, strategies, validation?

Is "What I'm Reading" Wednesday a thing? I was actually going to post about books later, maybe I will modify accordingly.

The book was actually kind of validating -- I knew a lot of it about myself but it was really nice to see it in print. On top of that, though, she cites a few studies and some anecdotal evidence that I have filed away in my back pocket for the next time someone decides that an open plan office is the way to go and my blood runs cold.

I don't know if the meme is an official thing--I saw it on victoria's lj and decided I could play along. We could make it be a thing, though!

It definitely sounds worth reading, then! It's good to know one isn't crazy or "just not trying hard enough" to be social. I will put it in my list.

We should make it a thing! I always get great ideas about what to read from my flist. Except it will be embarrassing b/c I'm always reading 20, 30, 50 pages of books and never finishing them. I will do I properly next Wednesday .

Books? I think I remember books....

[identity profile] topaz119.livejournal.com 2013-01-20 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I've gotten to the point that READ is on my daily to-do list because I end up blowing it off if it's not and then I get cranky.

Oh, I read plenty each day, often until 1:00 or 2:00am but I seem to be sucked into the fic these days and haven't touched a book in a long while. I used to read a couple books a month, when I was in between fandoms, but I've been pretty fic-centric since the hockey/Avengers extravaganza of the past year:)

Yeah, fic is so easy to fall into and thus does not count on under my READ to-do. 10 pages of a book is enough to keep me moving along so at least I feel like I've made a little headway.

I think I'm just now recovering from grad school reading burnout. There were a few years that I didn't have time to read anything other than dry academic articles and texts. I do need to start reading books again but I love used paperbacks and most of the good used stores have gone out of business in the last few years. Books rock!
