Thank you all for listening to me whine about what are (at base) fairly inconsequential things--I really do appreciate your kindness.
I got my hands on my new laptop at work yesterday: quad core i7 processor, 12 GB RAM, 2 TB hard drive (with some proportion of it solid state so when I install virtual machines it won't grind to a halt), dual-booting ubuntu and windows, all pretty and shiny (and triple monitors, be still my heart!!!!!) I booted it with the IT shop and it looked good, took it upstairs and hooked up all the monitors and extended my desktop and... poof. AMD display driver errors upon errors upon errors. I fiddled with it, the help desk fiddled with it (wow, rudest help desk guy I've ever had in however many years I've worked at this place) and finally, I picked it up and went back downstairs to knock on workstation services door and ask for my old laptop back.
SO MUCH SADFACE.
They're working on it, but I'm (as usual) slammed with a couple of projects, so my old workhorse of a Dell is back in service, at least for the weekend.
and! this is an actual (ridiculous but fun) thing we did while hanging out at Disney World over NYE--Me + 6 adult kids + my best friend from college (2 of the kids were hers, 2 were mine, 2 were L's) fighting our way through the hordes of kids at the Lego store to make custom Thor 2 minifigs to go with my Dept 56 Royal Observatory.

From left to right: Eric (holding the blue glowy thing that splinched his brain), Ian (binoculars), Darcy (coffee), Jane (sextant, which was as close as we could get to science-y stuff) (all custom built), Thor & Loki (stock Marvel Legos)
and that is my fannish fun for the day!

Hope you get your new laptop sorted soon.

The laptop works at the office but they're still sorting out my email & I can't get it to connect to my wireless at home. Honestly, we're a software company, you'd think we could do better than this.
I hope you get your hard drive fixed, too!
