(late) sunday six
I may have to start my own Monday writing meme, because I never get to this on time.
There's a little bit before this section here.
Natasha’s phone rings at that point, so whatever Steve thought he might have seen in her eyes is lost in her conversation with Clint’s ex-wife. Steve hasn’t actually met Dr. Morse face-to-face, but she’s supplied background and research for several operations he’s led, and he’s read a fair number of the reports filed on the operations she worked with Clint prior to the Avengers forming. Natasha seems on good terms with her, but conversations from a surgical waiting room are difficult no matter what. Steve has a brief second of wondering whether his hovering is helpful or intrusive, but then decides just as quickly that he doesn’t like the idea of any of his people having to give bad news without any kind of support and stays right where he is.
Natasha ends the call with a promise to check in regularly, even if there isn’t any news to report. Steve half-expects a pointed comment to him about how his presences is unnecessary, but Natasha only stands and breathes and Steve realizes he’s angled himself so that she can’t be seen by the rest of the room and that she’s taking advantage of that to steady herself. She nods at him once, a simple movement that’s somehow more intimate than anything Steve can remember sharing with her, and then, calm and composed again, steps around him to go back to join the growing group of SHIELD agents and analysts.
