Hi, hi, quick notes (I’ve been trying to write this all week, with predictable, post-Disney World (lack of) results):

mini_wrimo is open for business this year, \o/. You can sign up through 10 Nov this year, as things got started a little late. Other than the one year my subconscious got all pissy about writing to word counts, I almost always enjoy having this built-in group support (I am not using the accountability word as that kills my motivation.)

I think I’m also doing full-scale NaNo this year, so if you’re doing the thing, too, let me know and we can commiserate together. (I loved that note that went around on twitter, about how it’s Inktober and all your artist friends are posting daily drawings and are all happy, and then it’s NaNo and all your writer friends disappear and only occasionally surface to ask you to kill them.) I have only the slightest plan, but I’m definitely a pantser, so I do better that way. I have characters and a general idea of a plot, so I’m just going to keep asking myself ‘and then what happens’ and ‘yes, that, buuuttttt’ or ‘no, and THEN’ and see where my brain goes.

Also, in my delight with Christopher Pike’s run on Star Trek: Discovery I went through a whack of podcasts related to the show and ohmyGOD, I hate what passes for fandom outside of my little bubble. I disliked what I listened to so much, I ended up having a dream where I had my own podcast with one of my oldest geeky friends, who now lives on the other side of the country. Our husbands refer to us as heterosexual life partners, and true to form, as soon as I texted her about the dream, she fired back, “WHY NOT?!” So, stay tuned for that. (Neither of us have the slightest idea what the hell we’re doing, but dear lord, some of these things I tried to listen to were SO DREARY I feel we can’t help but try.)

OMG, I just found out that the show that I imprinted on as a wee little topaz, Dark Shadows, the campy Gothic romance soap opera of the 60s, is available for streaming on Amazon! HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO ME!!

I watched from behind the couch at first, because my parents were all 'nooooo, you're too young,' which, obvs, I *was*, but, as I've said on twitter about this subject, the heart wants what it wants. And here I am, a half-century later, still all asquee. :D

I still haven't fully decided if I'm going for NaNo, but I did just get my account back up and running on the NaNo site, and I'm Ysabet there if you're adding people. ^_^

I found the same thing with Discovery fandom - so much of it was bleak and dull and pointlessly critical. I mean, I don't think it was The Perfect Show or anything, and I enjoy criticism out of love, but that's not what was happening in large parts of the fandom.

Yes, so dull! I would have been happy to find discussions of whether or not the show was hitting the mark in so many different areas, about if they were leaning a little too much into the action/adventure side of things like AOS did, or how criminally under-used Tig Notaro was (which, hey, I get, scheduling her had to be insane) but ugh, all I kept getting were these trivial, petty mumbles about how weird the set looked? (LBR, that set was amazing.)

Even more disappointing because I really enjoyed the panels the cast did at DragonCon--they got thoughtful, interesting questions from the audience and took their time answering them, and then, when I started trying to write in it, I listened to some other panels uploaded from a couple of other cons, and again, got good audience/cast interaction.

Discovery fandom was very patchy, it made me sad. But Pike is the best!! I am all aboard the Pike train, he was a great captain and he took the best care with his damaged, traumatised crew. I'm so here for that.

I am so aboard the Pike train it's not even funny. I wrote a Kelvin-timeline Pike/Kirk years and years ago (it was the only thing I ever wrote in Trek fandom) where I spent a ridiculous amount of time watching and re-watching the original Pike episodes and then got that uber-protective cringe you sometimes get when canon goes back for your favorite minor character. I couldn't watch until I had okays from people I trusted, but then, of course, fell headlong into the Disco Pike love. We'll just have to circle our wagons closely, as usual, right?
