random life stuff + recs

I’m in the middle of updating operating systems on the office laptop, so I thought I’d pop in here and say hi to all y’all. So...

Hi!

Nothing very exciting has been happening over this way, but D is *actually* on the waitlist to resume physical therapy, which is a relief; Oldest got his 2nd vax shot, #2 is getting his 2nd this week, and BabyBoy gets his first jab tomorrow. Also, I survived the worst of my deep cleaning appointments at the dentist & have been being a good girl & doing the whole multi-step brushing protocol they’ve set me up with daily. Also, I got my first haircut since all of this started, \o/. I swear, I almost burst into tears when I saw my stylist.

In other boring news, I have been puttering about the house & I officially own too many books (which is not a surprise) and too many clothes (which totally is). The stuff with the clothes is even more ridiculous given that I’m not going to be in the office until the end of the year & possibly not even then. And I’ve been wearing the same pair of Mom-jeans (that I happened to grab at Costco on my final, pre-pandemic shop) almost daily. I def need to work on those absent-minded ‘oh-that-looks-cute’ impulse buys going forward.

I finished TFATWS and

I have no idea what was going on with the plot (I semi-checked-out the engineered virus plot change, which is enough of an excuse for me given the state of the actual world) but I thoroughly enjoyed the character moments/growth, so I’m good. I had a wee moment of pique at how *much* growth there was, but only b/c I’d started writing a post-canon story almost before the first episode aired, which is all on me, but then I decided it had to have been months between the big fight & the rest of the events, so I’m good with sliding my fic in there. The trials of evolving canon, eye-roll.

I have zero familiarity with Shadow & Bone (or the sequels) so I’m turning to y’all as a barometer as to whether I should give the show a try...?

And finally, today’s recs from the (metaphorically) teetering pike of bookmarks both involve time-loop shenanigans to rework how canon played out.

god loves everybody, don't remind me by [archiveofourown.org profile] napricot, Black Panther, Erik & T'Challa, ~70,300 words, Mature === Whether or not Killmonger worships/believes in Bast is irrelevant to how things need to play out and if it takes a thousand mornings before he (and the rest of his family) figures things out, so be it.

Battle is the Great Redeemer by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lady_In_Red, Game of Thrones, Jaime/Brienne, ~69,300 words, Mature === I mean, almost anything would be a better use of Jaime Lannister than what canon gave us, but this is a particularly satisfying journey.

I'm in the same situation RE books and clothes. I've been slowly filling bags to take to Goodwill.

I highly recommend the Six of Crows duology (heists in fantasy steampunk Amsterdam!), but the first Grisha trilogy is pretty rote fantasy YA - Bardugo definitely upped her game between them. The show improves on that first trilogy quite a bit by giving the main girl more agency and spiking the obligatory love triangle pretty definitively by the time the season is over. Plus it provides a whole new adventure for three of the Crows that intersects in ways the books don't until later. Ben Barnes is fantastic in it as are the actors cast as the Crows. I would definitely recommend it, and once it gets going, it's pretty compelling.

That sounds pretty exciting actually! Yay for vaccines, and physical therapy, (and haircuts :)

I'm glad O is doing better and I hope you've had a little bit of time to decompress and process all of it.

Thank you! <3

He's continuing to be better -- down to one dose of meds! -- and Sunday was kind of our decompress day, which was very helpful. Because, yeah, I definitely find that operating through a crisis is one thing, but then the stress catches up with you once the adrenaline wears off...

And thank you, re: icon! It took me a while, but I finally figured out a pandemic icon that fit with my overall #aesthetic :P

Maybe not exciting but it looks like some good stuff is going on, or about to happen again.

I'm in the same boat about Shadow & Bone. One of my flist friends at LJ loves the books so has been eagerly waiting to see the show, but I haven't seen her post about it yet. So, I'll be keeping my eye out for what people think.
