daily december #14 - temptations

What temptation have I successfully resisted? (for [livejournal.com profile] matchboximpala)I

I think this is less of a successfully resisted temptation, but more of one that I'm in the process of resisting, with varying levels of success: comparing myself/my family to some mythical benchmark and never being satisfied (ie, keeping up with the Jones, but not just materially.) It's so tempting and easy to fall into that trap, and the entire first half of my life was made up of school and socializing that did nothing but encourage that way of thinking as a way of defining success. It's super hard not to do it, but whenever I manage it, life is much richer and more 'me'.

On a more frivolous note, I, uh, haven't given in and dyed the gray out of my hair -- it's a shock to look in the mirror and see all the gray/silver/white, but my hair grows so freaking fast I'd be spending a fortune touching up the roots/recovering with the semi-permanent. If I end up in the job market, though, all bets are off.

Have you seen the movie with David Duchovny called something like "Keeping Up with the Joneses"? It's all about a scam where a new family moves into a rich neighborhood and entices people to buy certain brands, but it turns out they are actors hired by a marketing company or something like that. It's not a great movie, but interesting premise.

Yes, yes, if you keep up with us, you too could have two houses, one that you can't sell without putting another 20K into, and one that needs about 50K worth of work. Keep up with us if you dare!
