Picking back up with the daily posts: #18 Popslash & Me

My favorite popslash memories (for [personal profile] turps)

Oh, popslash… After a lifetime of being fannish, from reading comic books and flailing about Star Wars as a teen to falling gratefully into the Bronze as a thirtysomething mother who wasn't supposed to be watching anything like Buffy, I have no idea why I dove headlong into fic based on boybands, but my goodness, I so did. My flist/circle is still stacked with the lovely people I met there and my fiction writing brain, the part that had hidden itself away from college onward, came alive there and has never stopped. ♥

If I had to tease out my favorite moments, they would start with how much crazy fun it was to trade footage, burning and copying and sending concert footage and MMC clips and MTV bits to and fro all over the world. (Pre-youtube fandom was a marvel.) And concert calls! Getting those random cell phone calls in the middle of the night where nobody said anything but JC's voice came floating out of the ether, live and so much more gorgeous than on any studio recording, was such a treat. (Now, I suppose we could do facetime calls and get video, too, if the dratted man would ever go out and sing again.) On the personal front, I will never not clap with glee at how we dragged so much printed-out fic to Chicago that Lex had to buy an extra backpack to truck it all home with her. Or then there was the totally disbelieving look on D's face as [livejournal.com profile] withdiamonds and I unpacked all the swag [livejournal.com profile] hammerhead22 managed to pack into a single box for us. (oh, god, the swag—I still have a giant box of all the *n-junk that came out of the Great Popslash Era. I can't bear to get rid of it, even if I have no earthly idea what I'm going to do with all the stickers and notebooks and watches and I don't even know what else.)

So, yeah: bootleg .wmv files and fic and swag, all wrapped up in friendship and squee—that really does sum up popslash for me. :D

I still wish I'd been around when popslash became a Thing, as it was a wonderful source of fun and inspiration for me, too.

I never understood how Popslash stole my heart either. *g*

Ahahaha, I have so much swag too. Have actually used several of the notebooks, pens, cards and stickers, but there's still a bunch of marionettes and other stuff taking up room in my closet...

I, of course, found popslash after it was over, but I'll never forget you emailing me a HUGE zip file of pretty much every song in existence. My mind was blown! And A sent us a HUGE box of STUFF that Andrea and I spent a whole weekend going through. Generous fans, man. *beams*

Oh, I have a box of *n-swag too (UNO cards!), and it's as compact as I can make it, but yeah -- can't quite bear to get rid of it. The pictures are so pretty, y'know? ;-)

I have a bin of magazines and DVDs under my bed that I can't bear to part with. And there's still a huge folder of *NSync videos and pictures on my external hard drive. Ahhh, pre-YouTube. Remember FTP downloading? :)

Aw, it always bums me out to hear people talk about popslash using past tense! It's not surprising, really, it's just...blerg. A downer. (I'm still here! I'm still totally down for squeeing about butts and naked lady pants! Where'd all these tumbleweeds come from?!)

*is deathly envious of your swag box*

Oh popslash :) If you can believe it, I still have at least one more tote full of Njunk in my basement that I just couldn't part with.

Isn't it amazing the friendships that have been forged through fandom? I often think of little kindnesses that people offered over the year, like buying me disco ball ornaments that I wanted when I was unemployed. Small but so impactful.

*hugs*

Those are fantastic memories.

I still have so much njunk too, and you can't seem to get rid of it.

Thank you for such a great answer.

I still have a couple of those fic binders and the backpack, which I actually used yesterday lol
