My mom was discharged from the hospital last week, so I went to her house to hang out for a while. I don't know that she's better, precisely, but she's very happy to be home, and goodness knows we all trust her visiting nurse more than just about anyone to take care of her complicated medical needs. My brother is still staying with her, and I overlapped with his wife being there, too, so that was good to see her. Mom is so worn down that she's falling asleep in between sentences, so we had a very low-key weekend, mostly going through 70 year old pictures. When she napped, did electronic housekeeping (updating her phone and tablet, getting the chromecast rebooted, showing my brother how to stream Netflix on it, etc) In the middle of that process, we (he and I) ended up watching Chef, which ended with him (he worked his way through grad school as a line cook/sous chef) getting all inspired in the kitchen. I made soup, he made flan and a Spanish tortilla and I don't even know what else, but it was very companionable.

And then I went by the barbecue place with the amazing spareribs (different than the barbecue place with the amazing pulled pork because I am married to a bbq snob) and loaded up, and googlemaps managed to find me a way back across the washed-out/flooded roads and I got home in time to feed the HoB ribs of the gods for dinner.

I am still doing fairly well with bringing my lunch—today is some of the soup I made for my brother (chicken with wild rice) and ham / cheddar / whole grain mustard on a pretzel roll. I'm experimenting with assorted noodles, too, to see if I can do some kind of makeshift ramen w/o the chemicals and sad little bits of dehydrated veggies that make up standard US versions. If I work it out, I'll let you know.

Also, it is really really bad (in a good way) to have a Starbucks in the lobby (aka, wow, the Toasted Graham Syrup is v. v. tasty.)

Alsoalso, if you want to prompt me with a pairing, I'm still happy to do more of the autumn ship meme.

You've already answered one for me, so consider this playing with you rather than a request. If you want to, here's an idea and an audience.

Mulder & Scully (or Mulder/Scully, if you like)

That sounds like good cooking family time, and I hope your mom feels better at home.

I'm cooking pumpkin soup right now. Sadly it's in the slow cooker so won't be done for hours.

Hopefully just being home will make your mom feel better!

I just saw Chef for the first time recently, and LOVED it. A friend of mine got me hooked on Master Chef -- do you watch that too?

Signed,
Your Friend, The Terminal Uncook.

PS - I hope you mother feels better quickly, and completely. :)

BabyBoy loves him some cooking shows, so I end up watching a little bit of all of them. (We're going to Disney World in a few weeks and he is most excited about the part where I managed to get reservations at Morimoto Asia -- "it's THE IRON CHEF", he keeps saying.)

I love the kids version of MC -- who knew Gordon Ramsay would be so awesome with kids?

It is wonderful to talk to you again!

Alright, I'll bite! Would you hate me forever if I asked you for popslash? Chris and JC? (Or any other pairing, really, if you're not feeling those two today. I'm ever so easy. :)

[identity profile] topaz119.livejournal.com 2015-10-14 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I love it! And I still love Chris and JC, for sure! I'll be back in a bit with the answers...

[identity profile] topaz119.livejournal.com 2015-10-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, so, Chris and JC...

Chris picks out and carves the pumpkins. Plural. MANY MANY PUMPKINS. Because, hey, it's worth going all out for Halloween, right? The kitchen (and he himself) are covered with pumpkin guts for a week. He is not allowed near JC w/o a full shower/decontamination process.

It's not just a haunted house, it's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando. And it's not just HHN, but the 25th anniversary, so they are going all out. JC is the first to crack (the clowns are terrifying), but by the time they get through all of the scare zones, Chris is right there with him and they're holding onto each other for dear life.

For matching costume ideas, I can't resist a Rocky Horror motif, with JC as Frank and Chris as Eddie. :D

JC makes a very good blanket fort, but Chris takes it to extremes and builds out extra rooms and nooks and crannies. (Like the pumpkins, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess.)

Chris is a giant candy thief. JC plays along and hides his stash, just to watch Chris hunt it down.

Oh, you know JC just wanders around the corn maze, not really caring at all that he's lost, just enjoying the night.

Chris would seem to be the likely culprit for scary stories, and he does do a very good job at it, but JC has a serious deadpan and Chris never knows when one of his crazy stories is going to veer off into creepy territory. It makes Chris just a little nuts, waiting to see if there's a scary punchline.

JC likes the autumn leaves so much, he flies them up to New England to drive around and look a the leaves. It makes Chris crazy, but it's not like he's going to say no when JC asks him to go along. :D

YES -- Chris as Eddie is all things right and perfect and good in the world! And as for JC's Totally Oblivious Corn Maze Adventure -- my heart!

Oh yeah, this entry's SO going into my LJ memories. :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

You're welcome! I'm so glad they all worked for you. I actually wrote a Chris/JC with JC in full Rocky Horror mode at some point back in the day--I'm pretty sure I got it on AO3...

Well, not an hour after I posted this my brother made some passive-aggressive, snotty comment on a fb post I made, with my mom tagged in it (I tagged it for her) which meant I couldn't be as bitchy as I wanted to back at him (there's no sense getting her upset), so the bloom of companionability withered and died right there.

Families. YEESH.
