A fictional character I find attractive (for [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock)

I'm not really even sure where to start because yow, SO MANY. Fictional characters were my best friends growing up (I did actually have friends, but fictional friends understood depths of feeling so much better than second generation immigrant kids of steelworkers who were just trying to get by.) I read historical romances (not bodice rippers--that trend came a little later) and romantic mysteries (gothic and not) and the occasional literary fiction and comic books on the side. (So, not entirely different than now.)

If I look back now, right off the top of my head, there are two that set me on my path of dark, faintly dangerous and competent: Alexander MacHugh of Jan Cox Speas Bride of the MacHugh and Max Gale of Mary Stewart's This Rough Magic. Both of them took care of their families (in The MacHugh's case, his entire clan), didn't really give a damn what people thought of them in general, knew their way around a fight or three, and had aloof exteriors that hid great depths of emotion. Plus, Max could quote Shakespeare at the drop of a hat (his father was an actor.) What more could tween!me want?

You know, and then Han Solo was running around and life took a turn for the fantastical, and when I grew up, I walked away from the dark and dangerous types (though it took a while and a lot of DRAAAAMAAAAA) and married the slightly older, baseball-coaching spiritual brother of Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights (the tv show, not the movie) so that probably should answer the question for real, because we're still together 30 years later.
